The Standup Historian
November 8 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
£10Eighty years ago, 6 June 1944, one of the most historically significant events in history occurred in Normandy France – D DAY. Come to the Standup Historian’s fascinating lecture on Remembrance Friday and remember the brave men who lost their lives to conquer the Nazis and set Europe free. Forties-style singers, The Decibelles, will add to the atmosphere with some Wartime singing in the interval.
“The Standup Historian” covers many topics in his D-Day lecture. In Part I there will not only be a focus on the customary facts and figures, but also sounds from the beaches. Film testimony from real veterans and an evocative reading from Ernest Hemingway’s’ trip to Omaha Beach including a variety of photographs from the day will also be shown.
In the interval a full range of German and British original infantry weapons will be available for the audience to see as well as well as the usual bar refreshments in the Function Room
PART II covers Hitler’s state of mind, why the Germans failed on the day and a fascinating account of the German soldier Hein Severloh’s day on June 6th. What he saw and how he survived after killing over 1500 marines on that bloody beach.
Then there will be a focus on the Luftwaffe, and the Royal Navy, on that day.
Despite the serious nature of the lecture, The Standup Historian delivers it all in a lighthearted manner and the evening will be entertaining and enjoyable, as well as informative
You will learn things you never knew about D-Day! And to add to the atmosphere The Decibelles, a group of forties-style young women will be singing evocative and rousing war songs in the Bar during the interval.
As an extra Inducement to invest in a ticket (the cost of which will go the RBL) the Standup Historian has arranged a meal deal especially for members of the Athenæum audience who buy tickets for this event; this is for a party of four at the Agra upon presentation of their ticket. This will be one free MAIN COURSE for the party. This can be used up to a month after the event.
